Emotional Index
A spiral of hair
in the bristles of brushes,
wisps of dead skin
on the inside of jumpers,
tears of mascara
on white linen pillows,
fat from the bacon
congealed in a grill pan,
ghostly indents
from the press of a biro,
wine spills transferred
onto printed cream paper,
gravel in soles
of high ridged black trainers,
indelible pollen
from lilies, stained yellow,
magnetic words
sticking close to the metal,
networks and space maps
of unused potential,
virus and genome
pre-programmed responses,
traces of lives
in the space of a headstone,
bodies curled under in
sculpted lapilli,
carbon dioxide
breathed over thick pigment,
x-rays reveal
the initial intention,
foam on a beer glass
and pink lipstick lip prints,
are moments of silence:
an emotional index.
